Reviews

Angelle M. Vinet delivered a “multifacético” and in depth body of work. I found her book a surprising revelation about the missing master pieces of Whistler, and that her incisive and laborious study can potentially lead to a broad acknowledgement of her findings, which in turns can become an event with historic significance in the art world. Specially for the new generations of art scholars. Her contribution presents challenging insights. It is evident that in her research hardly left any stone unturned and demonstrate a breadth of knowledge on 19th Century Paintings. In particular how the influence of the old masters evolved in the are revolutionary James McNeill Whistler. The author presentation is impressive in terms of all the subjects she discuss. Personally, I never expected that the synesthesia of the mid-nineteenth century where music inspired new painting transcended to poetry. Specifically, that James McNeill Whistler’s “Nocturne” paintings were connected not just to Chopin’s 21 Nocturnes but to literature, specifically to Ruben Dario ‘s “Nocturnos” poems I read in my childhood. I bought my first digital copy from Lulu's at a reasonable price, then two more copies already for great friends. A reply indicated that it was considered a "wonderful gift. I strongly recommend the book. Exceptional book to learn about the influence of the Old Masters on 19th Century painting, and modern art. Including me being new to the subject.
