My curiosity about N.C. Wyeth was probably generated by a book my father was given as a child. It was passed on to me and I have always been captivated by the illustrations of Indians and combat in an early and slightly tattered edition of Last of the Mahicans.I bought David Michaelis book expecting a biography of the artist and found so much more.It is a biography, but with unexpected insight. It has given me an understanding of painting style that two semesters of Art history could not give. and an understanding of the hereditary influences of mental challenges and their effects..Were it not for the huge store of letters between N.C. and his mother and the meticulous research by the author, this might have been a fascinating novel. Instead it is a fascinating description of the important insight into the innermost emotional motivations of one family that may have influenced American art for more then a century. Exceptional research and an engrossing look at a creative family who seem to show emotion in paint and pen.
