Reviews

I buy art books for the art plates (photos), not for the written content (although I do sometimes read the essays). I haven't read the essays contained in this book but they look promising. I have 3 or 4 other books on Gauguin, including one on Van Gogh and Gauguin in Arles. This book is a winner. It's really an overview of Cloissonism, Synthetism, and the Nabis and therefore contains some beautiful, large plates of work by Pierre Bonnard, Vuillard, Maurice Denis, Roussel, Maillol, Ranson, Emile Bernard, and others. Reflecting artistic influences on Gauguin as well has his influence on other artists, the book contains colorful plates by Guillaumin, Cezanne, Picasso, and others. The art photos are large and well produced. The selection of work is wonderful, including pieces done in Breton, Arles, Pont-Aven, and a few from the South Pacific. It includes some of Gauguin's lithographs and clay works. If you're looking for a catalogue of all of Gauguin's work, this is not it but this book does contain a great selection of his colorful and interesting work before his extended stay in the South Pacific. I would definitely recommend it.
